Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions Patients Ask

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for PAO?

Most candidates have hip dysplasia with pain, instability, or labral tears, and still have healthy enough cartilage to benefit from joint preservation.

Is physical therapy enough?

PT can help strengthen the muscles and reduce symptoms, but it cannot fix the shallow socket. Only surgery can correct the bone structure.

What is recovery like?

Most patients use crutches for 6–8 weeks. Full recovery takes several months, and return to sports often happens around 6–12 months depending on the activity.

4. Will I need a hip replacement later?

A PAO can delay or prevent the need for a hip replacement by improving joint mechanics and reducing wear on the cartilage.

5. Is PAO safe?

It is a major surgery, but it is very safe when performed by a high‑volume hip preservation surgeon. Complications are uncommon.

6. Will this help my labral tear?

Yes. Many patients have a labral repair at the same time as the PAO, or the improved socket position reduces stress on the labrum.

7. How long will I be in the hospital?

Most patients stay 2–3 nights.

8. When can I walk normally again?

Most people walk without crutches by 8–10 weeks, depending on healing and strength.

9. When can I return to work or school?

Desk work: 2–4 weeks
School: 2–4 weeks
Physical jobs: 3–4 months

10. Will I be able to run or play sports again?

Many patients return to running, sports, and high‑level activity once healing is complete and strength is restored.

How is a PAO different than a hip replacement?

A hip replacement is when the ball and socket are removed by the surgeon, and a metal and plastic one are inserted. A PAO allows you to keep all of your own cartilage and bone. This is why a PAO is only offered to patients who have healthy cartilage.
